As Miami’s celebrated art fair season prepares to kick-off, I decided to take a look back at the best artworks on show at one of my favorite shows, Art Miami.
Few things are more subjective than art and beauty.
And even fewer things evoke emotions on the level that art does. One piece of art can engender a broad range of emotions spanning the spectrum from love, peace, and joy to anger, hate and disgust. And there are times in which a singular artwork can set off a roller-coaster of widely disparate emotions.
But our reaction to art is so much more complicated than the emotions that surface within us.
Our decisions as to what makes something “art” or a “thing of beauty” are based on a myriad of factors from the purely instinctual to opinions carefully crafted after years (perhaps decades) of cultural exposure as well as conforming to societal norms – may they be good or bad or indifferent.
Art appreciation rarely occurs in a hermetically sealed bubble and that’s one of the reasons it was so challenging for me to select only nine pieces that I liked best from the Art Miami show. There were many examples of beautiful artistic expression at the art fair, but it was this group of nine that truly resonated with me.
